Frequently asked questions

What is a vacant FM frequency?

A channel between 88.1 and 107.9 MHz where no station — and no strong station next door on the dial — reaches your location. It is the best spot for a car FM transmitter, a Bluetooth FM adapter or a low-power transmitter.

How are the frequencies rated?

We estimate the signal of every licensed FM transmitter, translator and booster near you from the FCC records. “Clear” means no station is likely to be heard there or next to it, “Faint station” means a weak distant signal, and “In use” means a local station is on that channel or right beside it.

Why do clear frequencies change as I drive?

Stations cover different areas, so the clearest channels change from town to town. Look up your destination too, or pick a frequency that is clear in both places.

Can I broadcast on a vacant frequency?

Consumer FM transmitters that meet FCC Part 15 limits can use any frequency. Anything stronger needs an FCC license — this tool is not an engineering study.
