About CRB Classical 99.5
CRB Classical 99.5 is Boston's classical music station. It broadcasts as WCRB on 99.5 FM, is licensed to Lowell, Massachusetts, and serves Greater Boston with the slogan "Classical Radio Boston". It is a non-commercial station owned by the WGBH Educational Foundation, and on this page you can listen to CRB Classical live online, free.
Classical music, all day
WCRB plays classical music around the clock — orchestral works, chamber music, opera and piano favorites — as part of GBH, the public media organization behind WGBH radio and television. It broadcasts from GBH's studio complex in Brighton, and its transmitter stands west of Andover.
The name
The WCRB call letters come from Charles River Broadcasting, the former owner of the earlier WCRB on 102.5 FM, and today they double as a backronym for the slogan "Classical Radio Boston". The 99.5 licence itself dates to October 5, 1948, when it began as WLLH-FM; it later carried the calls WSSH, WOAZ and WKLB-FM before classical music arrived.
GBH sister stations
On radio, WCRB's sisters are WGBH, WCAI, WNAN and WZAI. On television, GBH runs WGBH-TV, WGBX-TV, WGBY-TV and WFXZ-CD.
