Jazz, first of all

WBGO primarily plays jazz — the music's history and its present, from classic recordings to today's players. The HD2 channel, "The Jazz Bee", is a second jazz service.

News and public affairs

Alongside the music, the station airs public affairs programming, locally produced newscasts and NPR news and programs.

Wayne Shorter Way

The studios and offices are on Park Place in downtown Newark — a street also known, since April 2022, as "Wayne Shorter Way" after the great saxophonist. The transmitter is at 4 Times Square in Manhattan, which carries the signal across New York City.

History

WBGO's licence dates to 1948. The call letters honor Bob G. Ottenhoff.
