About 101 WRIF
101 WRIF is Detroit's rock station. It broadcasts on 101.1 FM, is licensed to Detroit and serves Metro Detroit, Windsor and Southwestern Ontario with the slogan "Everything That Rocks Detroit". The station is owned by Beasley Media Group, and on this page you can listen to WRIF live online, free. The online stream is offered to listeners inside the United States; outside the country it may not play because of rights restrictions.
Active rock
WRIF plays active rock — hard rock and the heavy hitters of the format. HD2 plays alternative rock, and HD3 carries "Dave & Chuck 24/7". Some programming comes through United Stations Radio Networks.
A grandfathered signal
WRIF is a grandfathered FM station: under today's FCC limits for Class B stations, a new station would be allowed at most 16,000 watts from a 268-meter antenna, but WRIF keeps its older, stronger facility. The transmitter is in Southfield near 10 Mile Road and Northwestern Highway, on the tower of former sister station WXYZ-TV. The studios are in Ferndale.
History
The station signed on in 1948 as WXYZ-FM and became WRIF in 1971 — the call letters stand for a guitar riff.
Sister stations
In Detroit, Beasley also owns WCSX, WDMK and WMGC-FM.
