About 96.3 WHUR
96.3 WHUR is Washington's urban adult contemporary station. It broadcasts as WHUR-FM on 96.3 FM, is licensed to Washington, D.C., and serves the whole metro area. On this page you can listen to WHUR live online, free.
Owned by Howard University
WHUR is owned and operated by Howard University, which makes it one of the few commercial radio stations in the United States owned by a university, and the only independent, locally owned station in the Washington area. Its staff mentor students from Howard's school of communications, and the studios are on the campus, in the C. B. Powell Building on Bryant Street NW.
R&B and soul
WHUR plays urban adult contemporary music — classic and current R&B and soul — with personalities who have been part of Washington radio for decades. National programming comes from Premiere Networks, Compass Media Networks and United Stations Radio Networks.
The Quiet Storm
WHUR is closely associated with the Quiet Storm, the late-night format of smooth R&B ballads that spread across the country. Its HD2 channel is dedicated to it, while HD3 and HD4 carry WHBC and DC Radio.
History
The frequency dates to 1939 as the experimental W3XO and was WTOP-FM for two decades before Howard University took it over as WHUR in 1971. Its call letters stand for Howard University Radio, and it is co-owned with the PBS station WHUT-TV.
