A 50,000-watt signal
The transmitter is a three-tower array off East Chatham Street in Cary. Along with WBT in Charlotte, WPTF is one of two North Carolina AM stations at the maximum 50,000 watts. It is non-directional by day and directional at night, when it can still be heard across much of the Southeastern United States.
We Protect The Family
WPTF signed on on October 25, 1924, as WFBQ and was WRCO before taking its current name. The call letters come from "We Protect The Family", the slogan of former owner Durham Life Insurance Company.
Sister stations
Its sister stations include WBBB, WKIX, WKIX-FM, WKJO, WKXU, WPLW-FM, WQDR, WQDR-FM and WYMY.
