Alternative programming
Since the Columbia University protests of 1968, WKCR has focused on alternative music programming, with an emphasis on jazz, classical music and hip-hop — a schedule unlike any commercial station's.
A radio history going back to 1908
The station traces its history to 1908 and the Columbia University Radio Club. Students provided programming for W2XMN, the experimental FM station founded by Professor Edwin Howard Armstrong, the inventor of FM. WKCR was founded in 1941, and on May 14, 1956, it became one of the first college stations to broadcast on FM.
King's Crown Radio
The call letters stand for "King's Crown Radio", after the crown in Columbia's heritage as King's College.
HD channels
HD2 simulcasts classical station WWFM, and HD3 carries NPR programming.
